I am pleased to announce that the Rock River Section of the American Chemical Society will once again be participating in the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO). The primary goals of this program are to stimulate interest and achievement in chemistry among high school students and to provide recognition of outstanding high school chemistry students, teachers and schools.
Students competing in the USNCO are eligible to be selected as members of the United Statesteam for the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). For the past twenty three years, the United States has sent a team of four students to compete with nations around the world at the IChO. The students participate in both theoretical and laboratory examinations over several days. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the best performers, and the IChO provides students the opportunity to interact with their peers from other countries.
Our immediate task is to nominate ten students who will represent our local section in participating in the USNCO national examination. In order to identify these students, we will be conducting a local examination to be held on Saturday March 19th, 2011 from 10 am to 12 noon. The location of the examination will be held in room 207 of Rockford College’s Starr Science Building.
Each school will be allowed two groups of students at the local examination. The First Year group may consist of up to ten students who are taking or have taken one year of chemistry. The Advance group may consist of up to ten students who are taking or have taken more than one year of chemistry. Each student who participates in the local section examination will receive a certificate of participation. Furthermore, the Rock River Section will also continue its tradition of presenting monetary rewards to the top local finishers in each group (First year and Advanced).
The top ten eligible students from the local examination will then take the USNCO written and laboratory examinations on the morning of Saturday, April 16th, 2011. Please note that students must be U.S. Citizens in order to participate in the national examination and the local section is restricted to selecting a maximum of two students from each school to participate in the local examination. Nationality is not a factor in participating in the local section examination.
Local High School Science teachers are encouraged to send students to participate in the local section exam.
