Southwest Georgia Section Celebrates Earth Day 2013 with Illustrated Poem Contest

The Southwest Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) thanks the teachers in the area who submitted their student’s illustrated poems to the CCED 2013 contest:

Our Earth: Handle with Care!

The topics for the poems were related to green chemistry and sustainability, recycling, clean air, carbon footprint, plants, water conservation, and the environment. More than 200 entries from ten schools were submitted in 4 categories and the winners were determined with the help of faculty from the Chemistry Department of Valdosta State University on Friday April 4, 2013.

The best poem awards went to: 

a) Lexi McIntyre from Northside Primary School (K-2nd grade);

b) Tyana Young from W. G. Nunn Elementary (3rd-5th grades);

c) Victoria Holmes from Valwood School (6th-8th grade) and

d) Courtney Boone from Valdosta High School (9th-12th grade).

The best poems will represent the local section in the national contest in Washington, DC.

Honorary mention diplomas were awarded to: Jaimie Hutcheson (Kindergarten) from Eastside Elementary; Jessie Hutcheson (3rd ) from Eastside Elementary;  Sarah Gray Parrott (7th) from Valwood School, and Shea Fisher (12th) from Lowndes High School.

 

The awards will be presented during the Earth Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20.
