Contest Deadline: Thursday November 1st, 2018

 

Prizes: $50 for first place on each of the four categories (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12)

Winners of the Southwest Georgia illustrated poem contest will advance to the ACS National Illustrated Poem Contest! 

The Southwest Georgia Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) thanks the teachers in the area who submitted their student’s illustrated poems to the CCED 2014 contest with theme “The Wonders of Water”. The best poems awards were presented during the Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 19.  The awards and $50 prizes went to:  
a) Sofia Paoletti from Valwood School (K-2nd grade); 
b) Jessie Hutcheson from Eastside Elementary (3rd-5th grades); 
c) Abigail McGee from Pine Grove Middle School (6th-8th grade) and 
d) Alison Peters from Lowndes High School, Valdosta (9th-12th grade).
The best poems will represent the local section in the national contest.
Honorary mention diplomas were awarded to: Brandon Vining (2nd grade) from Eastside Elementary; Chance A. Cigola (5th) from W. G. Nunn Elementary; Danielle Sweet (8th) from St. John Catholic School, and Max Wang(10th) from Lowndes High School.

The Southwest Georgia local section has a national winner of the NCW 2013 Poem Contest: Jessie Mirabella Hutcheson, fourth grade student at Eastside Elementary School, has won 1st place in the 3rd-5th grade category. Jessie will receive a $300 check, certificate, and award letter mailed altogether to her school.

Our Earth: Handle with Care!

The topics for the poems were related to green chemistry and sustainability, recycling, clean air, carbon footprint, plants, water conservation, and the environment. More than 200 entries from ten schools were submitted in 4 categories and the winners were determined with the help of faculty from the Chemistry Department of Valdosta State University on Friday April 4, 2013.

The best poem awards went to: 

a) Lexi McIntyre from Northside Primary School (K-2nd grade);

b) Tyana Young from W. G. Nunn Elementary (3rd-5th grades);

c) Victoria Holmes from Valwood School (6th-8th grade) and

d) Courtney Boone from Valdosta High School (9th-12th grade).

The best poems will represent the local section in the national contest in Washington, DC.

Honorary mention diplomas were awarded to: Jaimie Hutcheson (Kindergarten) from Eastside Elementary; Jessie Hutcheson (3rd ) from Eastside Elementary;  Sarah Gray Parrott (7th) from Valwood School, and Shea Fisher (12th) from Lowndes High School.

 

The awards will be presented during the Earth Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 20. Southwest Georgia had an outstanding year-long IYC program that included a Science Saturday, IYC themed seminars, and two poem contests. They improved seminar attendance by 80%, and did an outstanding job in utilizing FORMS.
