A graduate student is working on a purification protocol which should enable her to complete a proof of her experimental model.  Her supervisor is sent a paper to review and finds that it is from a competitor and is very close to her work.  They decide quite objectively that the paper is not convincing, and recommend against publishing it.  However, a technique described in the paper enables the graduate student to complete her work. How should she proceed?
