This year has been a very successful one for the Senior Chemists Committee (SCC). Local Sections have made a valuable contribution toward achieving this goal through hosting special events and sponsoring activities that encourage engagement among senior chemists. In 2016, the Senior Chemists Committee awarded mini-grants to 10 Local Sections: Ames, Central North Carolina, Colorado, Indiana, Minnesota, Nashville, New York, Pittsburgh, Santa Clara, and Sioux Valley. Congratulations are extended to all of the awardees.

The SCC Mini-Grant Program offers a limited number of grants to Local Sections that wish to sponsor an event or activity that will increase the engagement of senior members and encourage innovative activities that will benefit the local community, schools, or legislative government. To date, many of the Local Sections that received a mini-grant have already hosted wonderful events. This past October, the Pittsburgh Section hosted a special dinner to celebrate its 50- and 60-year members and with doing so, generated ideas for future collaborative activities for senior and younger chemists. The Ames Local Section celebrated its 100th Anniversary in November at Hach Hall of Iowa State University. The centennial event was well-attended. Dr. Tom Barton (ACS President 2014) was the guest speaker. The Indiana Section held a very successful "cheese-themed" dinner which highlighted the history and chemistry of cheese with a fascinating presentation by Dr. Maria Alvim Gaston. The event was also a great time for networking and identifying further opportunities for engagement.  "Short Talks" on scientific projects, a pre-holiday lunch, and a survey of senior chemists were all accomplished by the Minnesota Section this year.

If you're looking to establish a senior chemists committee or group in your Local Section, submit an application to the SCC Mini-Grant Program. An announcement will be made in March 2017 regarding the program and the deadline for submission. If you have questions, please send them to seniorchemists@acs.org.
