About Fluorine Division

About Us

The Division of Fluorine Chemistry is an active group of scientists who promote their interest in Fluorine Chemistry. Fluorine is the most reactive of the elements and its incorporation in a molecule more often than not imparts interesting, if not dramatic, changes of properties. As such, fluorine-containing materials have important commercial applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, plastics and polymers, fluorine-18 radiopharmaceuticals, surface modification, electronics, solvents, and as refrigerants. Indeed life would be much more difficult if it were not for fluorine! From an academic point of view, fluorine has opened up a whole new branch of "unnatural" chemistry, rich in unexpected and novel reactions, and has proved to be an invaluable mechanistic probe. The Division encourages interest in fluorine chemistry by presenting tutorials and symposia, organizing technical meetings, and sponsoring research scholarships.

The Division meets annually at ACS national meetings, as well as other national and international venues, with our flagship meeting being the biennial Winter Fluorine Conference in Florida.

See the Calendar page for these and other meetings of interest.
