2018 Chemistry Olympiad

LOCAL STUDENTS MAY QUALIFY FOR INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD

The Northern NY Section of the American Chemical Society has announced the names of 4 outstanding high school chemistry students in the North Country. The students qualified for and participated in the 2018 ACS National Chemistry Olympiad on April 23rd in Canton. Out of 32 North Country students that initially participated in the local Chemistry Olympiad in March, these 4 students earned the privilege to participate with around 1,200 other chemistry students from around the country in the National Chemistry Olympiad. Depending on their performance, they may be invited to be a member of the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad team that will compete in the 50th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Bratislava, Slovakia and Prague, Czech Republic in July.

The students are:

Emily Schreurs, Canton

Cooper Stuntz, Canton

Phillip Kramer, Harrisville

Nathan Lee, General Brown

The IChO involves a series of theoretical exams, laboratory exercises, and other activities aimed at identifying the best chemistry students from participating nations from around the world. The U.S. has participated in this event since 1984. In 2017, the U.S. team won four gold medals. A total of 297 students represented 76 countries at the 49th IChO in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

The 4 local nominees are among over 1,200 nationwide that participated in the National Chemistry Olympiad from April 17-23. Twenty students will be identified and will undergo intensive training June 10-25, 2018 at the U.S. Air Force Academy, CO. The top four will be chosen to represent the U.S. in the 50th IChO competition.

Founded in 1876 and chartered by Congress, the American Chemical Society is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to the advancement of chemistry in the public interest serving nearly 150,000 members. The Northern NY Section is one of 185 across the nation.

The Northern NY Section again wants to congratulate all of the 32 participants from our region as well as their teachers for their success and involvement in this program. We invite high school chemistry teachers around the North Country to consider this program during the 2018-2019 school year, and we look forward to seeing your students compete.
