Science and Human Rights Webinar Series: Coffee for Justice – Chemistry in Service to Small-holder Coffee Producers

ACS has been at the forefront of highlighting science and human rights issues for over two decades.  As ACS President Dr. Bassam Shakhashiri puts it, “scientists must be responsible citizens, [which] requires each of us to have and adhere to high values and virtues as scientists and citizens to advance the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people.”  In this spirit, the ACS International Activities Committee is hosting this webinar in an effort to engage a broader audience of chemical professionals in human rights issues. 

Join us, on Tuesday, October 9 at 2:00-3:00 p.m. EDT, to learn more about the central role science, specifically chemistry, plays in empowering and assisting small-scale coffee farmers in Latin America and Africa, in the wake of the devastating coffee crisis, through research and appropriate technology methods allowing the production of high-quality specialty market quality coffee. 

Dr. Susan Jackels, professor of chemistry at Seattle University, will share her work with the Coffee for Justice Project, and discuss:

• the Coffee Crisis;
• the coffee production process;
• the scientific investigation that led to the design of a kit for optimization of coffee fermentation;
• the experiences of four coffee harvest seasons implementing the kit and method with over one hundred Nicaraguan coffee farmers;
• the building of a coffee processing mill with wastewater treatment designed by engineering students; and
• the experiences with farmers and families in transition to organic and Fair Trade coffee production.
