a RITE at Leeds conference Wednesday 24 June 2015 University of Leeds
About the conference
The Emperor’s New Clothes sees the RITE Group return to the University of Leeds with a reenergised and refocused approach to sustainability in the world of fashion and textiles. Recognising that the industry needs a step-change in its approach to sustainability in terms of design, technology and collaborative action, the line-up for the conference is as exciting and thought-provoking as it is unique. Confirmed speakers include:
Professor Tim Benton, UK Champion for Global Food Security and expert in sustainability in agriculture, University of Leeds
Sean Cady, Vice President, Global Responsible Sourcing, VF Corporation
Dr Mathilda Tham, Professor in Design, Linnaeus University and Metadesign researcher, Goldsmiths, University of London
Dr Mats Westin, Program Director, Mistra Future Fashion project
There is a growing recognition within fashion and textiles that a step-change is required in our approach to sustainability. To date, sustainable innovation has tended to concentrate on eco-efficiency: reducing, rather than truly addressing, environmental and social impacts. This conference intends to reveal the truth about the current state of the fashion industry and ask fundamental questions – which have, to now, largely gone unspoken – relating to consumption and growth. Moving beyond prevailing assumptions, we will encourage delegates to imagine alternative textile futures, where sustainability is intrinsically applied to all aspects of fashion and textiles.
We aim to host an open discussion between stakeholders from a range of spheres: industry and academia, engineering and the arts, micro enterprises and industrial giants. The multifaceted challenge of sustainability requires a collaborative approach, and the conference will highlight the role of design in connecting technological and social research and innovation. Taking a strategically inclusive perspective, we will embrace both incremental initiatives and experimental approaches and encourage a frank debate about the scale and pace of change.
The Emperor’s New Clothes conference sees the RITE Group return to its birthplace, the University of Leeds. The group, founded in 2007, had great success in providing factual information about sustainability to the fashion industry, retailers, brands, media and government until its last conference in 2012.
