There will be a multitude of people taking pictures during the event.  In addition to the volunteers, I will try to hire a student photographer to take pictures during the event.  At the end of the event, please consider staying a little later, because I would like to try to get a single photograph with all of the volunteers.  At the very least, I would like pictures of each team, so just know that we will be having people roving about during the day taking pictures.  If you look at the post called "Images from the Past" you will see the types of photographs that have been generated over the years.  These pictures serve as a reminder of how our "Chemistry at the Mall" fair has improved over the years.

Volunteer Companies

In the second portion of our chemistry fair, organizations will sponsor tables which will have interactive or informative displays.  Each organization will list their own experiments, if they desire, but as a general overview, I thought it would be helpful to feature them here.  As more companies come on board, I'll add them to this list.  Thanks to all for volunteering your valuable time!!

  • Honeywell
  • Webb Chemical Corporation
  • Grand Rapids Community College
  • Amway
  • Aquinas College

Chem Demos on the stage

Posted by Louis Dupont Jan 15, 2014

Ready for some fun?  Chemists from various companies will perform eye catching demonstrations on the stage to the delight of the participants.  Each show will be approximately 45 minutes long and will occur at each hour.  This year, the chemists performing the demonstrations will be:

  • The Great Movini (magic show), from Honeywell Corporation, 11:00-12:00pm
  • Duane VandenBrink and Michele Malaski, from Gentex Corporation 12:00pm-1:00pm
  • Joel Nemes, from Gentex Corporation  1:00pm-2:00pm
  • Jim Krikke, from Grand Valley State University, 2:00pm-3:00pm.
  • Group 5, from Amway Corporation, 3:00pm-4:00pm.

Spell "SUCrOSe"

Like last year, we will have a contest to engage participants and to encourage them to visit as many tables as possible.  I would ask 5 companies who are volunteering to be willing to have a single stamp and stamp pad, so that you can mark your featured element on participants passports.  The location of the 5 companies with the stamp pads is supposed to be a secret, but you can give hints to the participants if you want to.  When the participants have all 5 stamps on their passports, they can fill out their name, address, phone or e-mail address and return the completed passport at the attendants table.  Thank you for volunteering to perform this.  It will be a great way to engage the participants!!

The 6 companies who will have an assigned element will be:

  • Honeywell       "S"
  • Company 2     "U"
  • Company 3     "Cr"
  • Company 4     "O"
  • Company 5     "Se"
