The Red River Valley ACS Local Section hosted Mr. Robert Blackledge, NICS (ret) for our Science Café at Bemidji State University (BSU), Dept of Chemistry. His title was “Forensic Characterization of Surface-Modified Fibers”. Professor Drago Bilanovic of BSU Chemistry performed all the planning and organizing at BSU. Mr. Andrew Bartlett, Associate Director of Communications & Marketing Bemidji State University, prepared a media release that went university-wide and to the local radio station.

The Science Café was held in a newly opened lecture room at BSU with up-to-date LCD screens. Twenty-three people attended, ranging from the chairs of BSU Chemistry and BSU Criminal Justice, to high school and college students, and members of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Robert’s talk focused on forensic chemistry techniques as well as real-world applications for this methodology. Following his talk, there was a reception with hors d’oeuvres. The audience members including interested general members of the public spoke with Mr. Blackledge. We were intrigued to know that he worked with the actors starring in the crime show NCIS!
