The Science Café hosted by the Nebraska Local Section was held at Soaring Wings Vineyard on March 17, 2009. We had invited Dr. Robert Bates through the speaker service to come and be the guest speaker for the event. Dr. Bates gave a short presentation on the “Pleasures and pitfalls of making wine in non-traditional wine states”. The event was publicised through the ACS Nebraska Newsletter. Approximately 20 people attended the event, including local area winemakers, viticulture professors, retired chemists, students, and other community members interested in winemaking. Through funding for the event, we were able to offer free wine tasting and hors d'oeuvres to attendees. The discussions were very interactive and the attendees contributed a lot of questions and comments. We also took this opportunity to recognize Dr. Berwyn Jones for his 50 years of service to the ACS.
