Job Summary
Under the direction of the Manager of Technical Services, conducts quality assurance accuracy audits regarding quality control respective to equipment performance, material sampling and analysis. Engages in data analysis and verification related to automated and manual air monitoring equipment via cross-checks of test sample results versus data supplied by the air monitoring equipment. Conducts chemical analyses on sample materials collected from air monitoring equipment in conjunction with County, State, and Federal environmental protection laws. Prepares test sample materials and calibrates test equipment. Performs qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine presence and nature of pollutants in the Air. Records test data into site logs and enters data into computer database. Prepares detailed analytical reports and quality assurance reports. Maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Participates in chemical analysis research or special environmental project as directed. Assists with the training of new Chemists pertinent to the policies and procedures of the department and quality assurance guidelines of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Minimum Qualifications
• Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or Environmental Chemistry. (Must provide an original copy of a transcript at time of interview.)
• Two (2) years’ full-time professional work experience as a Chemist.
• Full-time work experience as a Chemist in the environmental field is preferred.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance is required. (Must provide proof at time of interview.)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Knowledge of County, State, and Federal laws relative to environmental protection regulations. Skill in conducting qualitative and quantitative analytical chemical analysis; skill in interpreting statistical test data in conjunction with making correlation comparisons of test sample materials. Skill in calibrating and using various test instruments relative to chemical analyses; skill in using computer equipment for data entry functions or access of environmental technical databases; skill in using hand tools for mechanical tasks; skill in using scientific calculator for computing statistical data; skill in calibrating and using various test instruments relative to chemical analyses, i.e., Ion Chromatography and Atomic Absorption. Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with the public as well as with internal agencies. Ability to prepare detailed analytical reports and quality assurance reports pertinent to equipment performance, material sampling, and material analysis. Ability to train new Chemists pertinent to the policies and procedure of the department as well as USEPA quality assurance requirements. This position requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight, and climbing to rooftop sites if required. This position may require traveling to work assignments for which the employee must provide his/her own adequate means of transportation.
