Hilton Anaheim

I haven't used the ACS Network much this year but I decided to try it out right now since Bill says that the yahoo group will close soon. I found the ACS network somehat slow this afternoon and the word processor is not ideal. Insert characters tiresome.  Maybe I should cut and paste from Word.

Those of you who are going to the Anaheim meeting might like to note that the outdoor pool at the Hilton is being renovated until March 2011 and they won’t give me a date for when construction will finish.

I am identifying myself in full to please BobB 🙂

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Bob—Is there an AOL forum as well?  This proliferation of places to congregate makes communication difficult. We are close to a hundred members now on the ACS network - CINF Division group - which exceeds the old Yahoo group (and looks much more up to date).

We are on track to move wholesale to the ACS Network by the end of this year for CINF Division communications.  I am working on setting up the smaller exec committee group and I would encourage all of the committee chairs to give this a try as well for their respective teams (I will send out instructions once I get this done myself).   I am also passing along your performance complaints to the ACS Network team so they can look into them.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  --Carmen

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Carmen:

My bad.  Since I never have used either AOL or Yahoo as an ISP, I picked the wrong one out of the hat.  Yes, I meant our CINF business list on Yahoo group.

However, that old list had it's advantages.  I could properly reply to any note there (without admonition) by clicking reply on Outlook express.  To reply to this, I had to click on the ACS Network link, login (now that I know where to find the tab), and write my reply.  Becasue of the extra memory used all the way down the line (and because it's Cyber Monday), there were delays of several to many seconds for the screens to load and become fully active (scrollable).  What's more, even though I'm replying to your comment, it looks like I'm replying to "Re: Hilton Anaheim".  Oh yes, the spell checker is not as good as others.  Looks like backspace only, no insertion/deletion.

It is significant that the number of members increased, probably because the new members were on ACS  Network anyway and that membership in CINF Yahoo (got it right) was less publicized.  I do hope that CHMINF-L remains as such since that is of broader interest than to CINF members or even ACS members.

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Bob--  CHMINF-L still exists and yes, it is a terrific venue for broader Chemical Information communications outside of CINF_ACS.  It is a completely independent service that I think all of us value and use.   Again, the CINF group on the ACS Network was really set up so that we had a good venue to share CINF-related business that is targeted at the entire CINF membership (not just the functionaries - which is what the Yahoo list was).

The message is tagged Hilton Anaheim, because all of us have been responding on that thread.  I probably should have started a separate thread with a different heading  I am puzzled as to why you have trouble responding from the message directly.  You should be able to hit reply, just as you did with the Yahoo messages.   It has worked for me.  If you keep having this problem, let's alert Mark to it.

Hope you had a terrific Thanksgiving.  Thanks for keeping at it here on the ACS Network.  I am sure we will get all the kinks worked out in time.

Sincerely,  --Carmen

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Friends and colleagues,

Perhaps it would be a good idea to start a new discussion with a title, as Carmen suggests, that would be more to the point of the discussions -- something like CINFtalk?  on Infotalk?  or whatever you all decide.

The ACS Network is getting better, getting faster gradually and, of course, is not limited to ACS Members!   Thanks to Mark's message, I now realize that the link brings us right to the discussion and that, if we wish to post a reply, we need to click on LogIn at the top.  Did it for this, and it wasn't bad.

Great job everyone is doing here!  I've been in CINF for years and, for what it's worth, I'm enjoying this method of communicating.

Re: ACS Network usage, nee Hilton Anaheim

Carmen:

I don't know how ACSNet messages display for you, but I'm notified by e-mail.  When I access the message, there is no "reply" button.  Instructions at the bottom of the display say to either respond to the e-mail message or to click the link to ACSNet.  When I do the latter, I must login.  When I then hit reply after requesting full discussion display, the reply screen comes up but the messages are no longer visible.

If I do the former, back off to the original e-mail message screen on Outlook and then respond, the response gets posted but I get messages back, from either the ACS contact or you, that I should use ACSNet instead.  However, as I've noted, that process is more time consuming.

Incidently, I'm not the only ACSNet user griping about the system so it isn't just some Geezer in Maine who's dissatisfied.  I guess I'm one of the few griping about it in public.  I too want to see the system work.  There are a lot of us who would like it to work better and more efficiently.  Note that I did manage to modify the title rather than start a whole new string.

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Anne, news to me that the ACSNet is not limited to ACS members.  Sure looked like it to me that it was being pitched, at least, to ACS members only.  Even if it is open to non-ACS members, we should not be considering supplanting CHMINF-L with ACSNet.  It does not have appeal or utility to non-members.  Call me a curmudgeon, but I'm not a big fan of 2.0 communications in general.

Re: Hilton Anaheim

You can thwart the nasty text editor’s insertion/deletion feature by typing in lots of spaces and then filling them with text or by carriage return to do much the same. Or use Word and then paste your message in.

Maybe ACS could do a quick fix on this. It looks as if the wrong default is chosen compared with Word.

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Bob,

At the bottom of your message it says

Reply to this message by replying to this email -or- etc.

I just hit the reply button in Outlook. Can’t be bothered to login to the network.

Re: Hilton Anaheim

Maybe Mark O'Brien can comment on if and/or when ACS Network message

composition will be able to use MS-Word the way Outlook does.

Also, by using Reply in Outlook, I'm currently using MS-Word to compose this

reply. -Graham-
