Research and Special Interests: Extractive distillation with ionic liquids; Extraction of aromatics with ionic liquids; Recovery of oxygenated compounds from pyrolysis oil. I started my career with a potato starch company, AVEBE, where I developed membrane processes for the treatment of potato fruit water, the water in the potato, about 75% of the potato. I started on laboratory scale and ended on industrial scale, 6200 m2 of membrane area. Then I joined DSM, an international chemical company, where I continued developing membrane processes for several business units: gas seperation for hydrogen purification, ultrafiltration for enzyme recovery, gas separation for the recovery of propylene, nanofiltration for the separation of salts and low MW organic compounds and microfiltration for catalyst recovery. My last two years at DSM were about water management. Then I started my academic career, first at the University of Twente and now at the Eindhoven University of Technology. There I developed an extraction process with ionic liquids for the separation of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, including a pilot plant of 6 m high. Presently, we are also working with extractive distillation, also with ionic liquids. Another project is the recovery of valuable chemicals from pyrolysis oil, an European project.
