Born in Philadelphia on mischief night in 1953, Nicholas R. Natale (n2) showed more aptitude for cross country running than chemistry, until his first co-op respite from the academic rigors at Drexel University. During the first of three six- month assignments n2 was inspired at the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the guidance of Stan Osman and C.J. Dooley. In his co-op position as a mass spectrometry technician, n2 was able to observe numerous practical, everyday applications of chemistry to agriculture. A "method" chemist, these tangible examples piqued his interest in research.
Graduate education in chemistry is a tradition of teachers. During his apprenticeship with Professor R.O. Hutchins at Drexel University, n2 became convinced that teaching and research are synergistic. n2 received both B.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1979) from Drexel, where his dissertation was entitled "Trilogy of Molecular Transfiguration". n2 then moved on to a postdoctoral position at Colorado State University under the guidance of Dr. A.I. Meyers, where he studied the asymmetric synthesis of dihydropyridines. In 1981, he arrived at the University of Idaho as Assistant Professor, and rose through the ranks to full Professor. More important to n2 than Academic Research Enhancement Awards (National Institutes of Health, 1989-93 & 1999-2008), or the number of publications, is the fact that eleven of his research students continued on the tradition of teaching. He is currently Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Montana, where time is shared between the Center for Environmental Health Sciences and the NIH-COBRE Center for Structural and Functional Neuroscience. For the record, n2's publications, published abstracts, invited lectures and presentations at scientific meetings total over 400, as of mid-2012.
