Is full time professor at the National University of Mexico, where he teaches and researches on Pedagogical Chemistry Knowledge based in an historical and STS perspective.
He studied Chemical Engineering at UNAM, finishing his studies in 1971, and got his PhD in 1977 after a stay in the Quantum Chemistry Group at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he received the Hylleraas’ Award in the Summer Institute in 1975.
He has been lecturing for 40 years at different levels, from high school to postgraduate. Recently his subject matters have been ‘Molecular Symmetry’, ‘Didactics of Chemistry’, ‘General Chemistry’, ‘Structure of Matter’ and ‘Science and Society’.
He has been a consultant of UNESCO, coordinating seven chemistry experimental education projects in Latin America: the first at La Paz, Bolivia on 1980; the second at Asunción, Paraguay, on 1981. the third at Panamá, Panamá, and the fourth at La Habana, Cuba, both on 1982; the Fifth at Quito, Ecuador , on 1983; the sixth at Santo Domingo, República Dominicana, on 1984 and the seventh at San Juan, Puerto Rico, on 1985.
His most relevant books are Chemistry in Mexico: yesterday, today and tomorrow (UNAM, 1991); From tequixquitl to DNA (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1989); Atomic structure: A chemical approach; You and chemistry, and University Chemistry (Pearson Education 1986, 2001, 2005). He is the founder Director of the Journal Educación Química that now has 22 years of circulation and has been accepted for indexation by Scopus.
Garritz has published about 150 papers and chapters of books and participated in about 350 presentations, 120 of them in International meetings.
