Research and Special Interests: Axel Drefahl received his PhD degree at the Technical University of Munich in 1988 for investigating pattern-recognition methods to predict physicochemical properties and environmental behavior of organic compounds based on their molecular structure. He continued his molecular modeling studies and developed a novel molecular similarity algorithm for property prediction as a postdoctoral research affiliate at Stanford University. He led a research project at the Technical University of Freiberg, investigating the interaction of surfactant-coated nanoparticles by applying Monte-Carlo simulation techniques. He taught classes in physical and theoretical chemistry and supervised students in scientific computing and chemical software development. From 2001 to 2010, he researched task-specific procedures for the optimization of photovoltaic materials and devices. In 2011 Axel founded the CurlySMILES Project that extends current molecular notations to supramolecular structures and complex chemical architectures, providing a versatile interface for precise, problem-oriented encoding of such structures with applications in search, modeling, virtual library generation, screening and combinatorial design. Axel's interest include molecular diversity and chemical space exploration applied to and integrated with natural science education, research and sustainable development.
