Focus of my laboratory at the DVA Medical Center, Washington DC is to understand the mechanism of Ca2+ signaling/transport in kidney and salivary gland epithelial cells using genetic, pharmacological, and translational approaches. Our long-term goal is to understand the implications of these mechanisms in calcium stone disease, extraskeletal calcifications and biomineralization. Presently, we are utilizing a variety of approaches (such as biochemistry, Ca2+ imaging, microfluidic channel physiology) to determine whether the TRPC sub-families of ion channel proteins are involved in regulating/mediating Ca2+ transport. We are currently funded by NIH and NKF to continue these projects. Project 1: Mechanisms of salivary ductal stone formation. Project 2: Mechanism of calcium nephrolithiasis.
