Research and Special Interests: Postdoctoral research: I have developed a new ultrafast nonlinear infrared spectroscopy (3D-IR) to probe hydrogen bonding in liquid water. The experiments have demonstrated heterogeneous structural relaxation dynamics in liquid water at room temperature consistent with multiple subensembles which do not intermix on a >500 fs timescale. These subensembles can be understood from a complex network analysis of the hydrogen bond networks from molecular dynamics simulations. (advisor Prof. Peter Hamm). Ph.D. research: I developed both theoretical and experimental techniques to understand electron dynamics at the interface between a metal surface and a thin molecular film. In ultrafast angle-resolved two-photon photoemission (2ppe) one laser pulse photoexcites electrons to the surface of a single crystal subtstrate. A second laser pulse photoemits the electron after a time-delay, sending to a time-of-flight detector where its kinetic energy is measured. This technique allowed me to investigate topics including: electron solvation and localization at interfaces; small polaron formation in quasi-2d systems; models for charge injection into organic electronic devices; model electrochemical electrodes; and friction on the femtosecond time-scale (advisor Prof. Charles Harris). Undergraduate research: I developed a new NMR pulse sequence utilizing intermolecular zero- and double-quantum coherences to enhance contrast in medical imaging and to improve nmr spectroscopy in inhomogeneous magnetic fields (advisor Prof. Warren Warren).
