Neutron scattering applied for battery materials research

The collaboration between the Departments of Battery Technology and Neutron Materials Characterization at IFE (Institute for Energy Technology - Norway) resulted in a successful demonstration of neutron scattering as characterization method for battery materials – silicon nanoparticles.

 

This work recently published in ACS Applied Energy Materials developed a methodology for the characterization of the surface area of silicon nanomaterials and correlate that property with the lifetime of the materials in Li-ion battery cell. Such findings are essential for predicting the lifetime of the silicon nanomaterials in the next generation of Li-ion batteries.
