If you are interested in history, you may know that John Draper was the first ACS President in 1876. He was an eminent scientist, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, who did a lot of work on photography. He actually had a medical degree and was head of the medical school at NYU. He was also interested in interdisciplinary research even in the 19th century. Thus, he was both a good scientist and a respected ACS volunteer.
