Research and Special Interests: Dr. Jennifer L. Young is Manager at the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute (ACS GCI), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of green chemistry. Her work focuses on producing educational materials, promoting through communication and outreach, building green chemistry information databases, and managing awards and grants programs. Prior to joining ACS GCI in 2004, she held an industrial polymer research position at DuPont in the Ink Jet business. Her research involved synthesizing and studying new waterborne polymeric dispersant and binder technologies for pigmented inks for ink jet printers. Jennifer earned a Ph.D. in polymer/organic chemistry in 2000 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the direction of Joseph M. DeSimone. Her research focused on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric nanoparticles, synthesized in an environmentally benign solvent, supercritical carbon dioxide. At ACS GCI, Jennifer frequently collaborates on projects with professionals from other organizations, academic institutions, and industry. Some recent activities include: starting the ACS Webinars – Green Chemistry and Sustainability Series; developing the Greener Chemicals and Processes Information Standard (in process to become an ANSI standard through a partnership of ACS GCI, NSF International, and over 50 active stakeholders); leading educational workshops for industrial, educator, and student audiences; convening experts for scientific judging and peer review meetings for grants and awards; and managing the publication of educational materials. Jennifer has over 10 years of experience in green chemistry and has been invited nationally and internationally to present and publish on numerous green chemistry topics including polymers, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, renewable materials, information resources, education, and sustainability.
