Research and Special Interests: Dr.Mattingly received his undergraduate training at Bellarmine College (now Bellarmine University) in in 1977. He did his graduate work at the University of Notre Dame under Professor Marvin J. Miller. During that time he was awarded the Nieuwland (1977), Lubrizol (1978), and Reilly (1979-;81) Fellowships. He received a doctorate in 1981 for his dissertation entitled "Synthesis of 3-aminonocardicinic acid and other 2-azetidinones from O-substituted hydroxamates." He continued at Notre Dame as a postdoctoral fellow before moving to the University of California, Berkeley to work with Professor Henry Rapoport on the synthesis of sinefungin, a nucleotide antibiotic. Dr. Mattingly moved to Abbott Laboratories in 1984, where he currently holds the position of Research Fellow.
