Research and Special Interests: Dr. Wassel received his first bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a second bachelor's degree in Biology from Roger Williams University. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from North Carolina State University. He has been involved in nanotechnology for over 8 years. During his time at the NCSU, Dr. Wassel worked to develop an understanding of how different molecular architectures influence current voltage properties in metal/molecule/metal junctions. While at NCSU, Dr. Wassel developed expertise in the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles . This expertise was further developed during his postdoctoral position at the Hough Ear Institute where he developed super paramagnetic nanoparticles capable of delivering drugs to the cochlea. Currently Dr. Wassel is responsible for all drug formulations at Charlesson. Dr. Wassel has developed a proprietary polymeric nanoparticle based injectable for sustained drug delivery as well as microemulsion based eye drops and a biodegradable in-situ forming implant. He has also published in several prestigious journals, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemi and Nano Letters. At Charlesson, Dr. Wassel is principle investigator on nearly $1.5MM in non-dilutive federal and state funding for Charlesson's research program.
Area of Expertise: Nanoparticle/microparticle drug delivery systems, colloid chemistry, drug formulation, surface science
Years of Expertise: 6-10
