Research and Special Interests: Eric Scerri is originally from Malta. He obtained all his degrees in the UK. His bachelors and masters degrees were in chemistry from the universities of London and Southampton. His PhD was in history and philosophy of science from Kings College, London. He went to the US as a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech fifteen years ago and has remained in the US ever since. For the past 10 years he has been teaching chemistry and philosophy of science at the University of California at Los Angeles. His general chemistry classes are given to groups of 350 students at a time. Scerri is one of the founders of the field of philosophy of chemistry as well as the founder and editor of the journal Foundations of Chemistry, now in its twelfth year of publication. He has written what reviewers have called “the definitive book on the periodic table” that has been positively reviewed in about 50 journals in chemistry, history and philosophy of science, physics, science education etc. The book was awarded the Newby McCoy faculty award by UCLA and was named as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2007 by Library Choice Magazine. Scerri is also the author of two books with Imperial College Press in London and two more forthcoming books with Oxford University Press. Scerri is the author of over 100 journal articles in chemistry, chemical education and history and philosophy of science. In recent years he is turning increasingly towards working in the TV and radio media and to presenting his work to the general public. His research is on the history and philosophy of chemistry and chemical education and the public understanding of science. His journal publications and book chapters number about 120. He has also published many semi-popular articles in magazines such as Scientific American, American Scientist, Chemical Heritage, Chemistry World, Cosmos etc. Scerri has lectured all over the world including recent trips to Spain, Denmark, UK, Turkey, South Africa, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Colombia. His next few international talks will be in Paris, London and Sydney.
