How to make a chemical

Hi,

I am by no mean a chemist, but I was doing some research for a person project of mine. Thus, I wanted to know if the Magnesium in the following reaction can be replaced with another compound/element? (Ex. Fe) If so, what compound/elements would be an equivalent substitute in theory to achieve the following goal of the compound CaH2?

CaO + Mg + H2 → CaH2 + MgO

If not, can there be a substitute in this reaction?

CaCl2 + H2 + 2 Na → CaH2 + 2 NaCl

Let me know when you get the chance.

Thanks,

Robert Taylor
