Microencapsulation for Scented Stickers

Jump to solution

Hi. I'm not a chemist but I've been researching microencapsulation to make my own scratch and sniff stickers. I found an article describing the process which I can't  figure out how to attach here.

MICROENCAPSULATION OF NATURAL OILS BY A COACERVATION
TECHNIQUE USING GELATIN AS SHELL MATERIAL
Stanislav G. Bayryamov

I then went to chatgpt to ask how I should go about adhering the solution to my paper (sticker vinyl sheets) and it described "rinsing and filtering and allowing to dry" in order to "cure" the capsules...

Is drying necessary?

I was hoping I could adhere them once the suspension was cooled. I thought perhaps I could add gum arabic solution during the process, maybe? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Drying is typically necessary to ensure the microcapsules harden and form a stable shell that can protect the encapsulated oils. If you skip drying, the capsules may remain fragile and susceptible to rupture or leaking, which could affect the effectiveness of your scratch-and-sniff stickers.

Adding a gum arabic solution during the process could help bind the capsules to the vinyl sheet, but you would still need to ensure the capsules are sufficiently hardened before application. One option might be to partially dry the suspension, ensuring the capsules are stable, then mix them with gum arabic and apply them to your sticker surface.

This subject has similar powerlevel which you need to hardened the capsules.

Thank you for your insight!  I guess I'll look into some sort of filtering mesh... or something? I can't wait to start experimenting!

Wish me luck! 🤞
