Hi, I would like to check on the meaning of "reagent-grade ethyl alcohol" which is used in the preparation of the Furfural Solution 1% in the Ethyl Alcohol monograph.
Does anyone know what this "reagent-grade ethyl alcohol" is equivalent to?
1. Reagent Alcohol
2. Ethanol (96%)
3. Ethanol, Absolute
Thanks in advance!
Reagent-grade ethyl alcohol is a type of ethanol that is specifically purified for use in laboratory and analytical procedures. It is not necessarily equivalent to "Reagent Alcohol," which is a denatured alcohol, nor is it the same as standard "Ethanol (96%)" or "Ethanol, Absolute," although it may meet or exceed their purity standards. When a monograph specifies "reagent-grade," it requires a high-purity ethanol suitable for use as a solvent or reagent, free from impurities that could interfere with the analysis or preparation. Therefore, you should use ethanol that is labeled as "reagent-grade" or "analytical-reagent (AR) grade" to ensure the purity required for the preparation of the 1% furfural solution.
