who have experience with either path

Hello,

As an early-career chemist, I'm fortunate to have both an industry post-doc offer and a direct R&D scientist role offer. Both are in the same general field. I'm trying to weigh the trade-offs: the "learning and publication" value of the post-doc versus the "seniority and salary" value of the direct role. For those who have experience with either path, what long-term career impacts (5-10 years out) did you observe regarding promotion, leadership opportunities, and mobility?

Re: who have experience with either path

Both paths have merit. A post-doc offers deeper technical growth, networking, and publications that help in research-heavy or academic transitions later. The direct R&D role accelerates career progression, leadership experience, and financial stability. Long-term, it depends on whether you aim for scientific expertise or management/industry advancement.
