Earth Day is Friday April 22 and the 2016 theme is "The Great Indoors- Your Home’s Ecosystem," exploring the chemistry behind indoor air quality issues. Our goal this week is to build awareness of chemistry at the local level and to bring international focus to environmental causes, such as clean air, water, and energy. We hope that these event to illustrate the positive role that chemistry plays in preserving the Earth.

Wednesday, April 20, 7pm-9pm, Courtyard Café of the Illini Union

ISTC in conjunction with the ECI local section of the American Chemical Society and U of I’s Earth Week will be presenting a screening of the 2014 Emmy award-winning documentary “Chasing Ice". A panelist discussion will follow the film in which the audience will have a chance to ask questions about the film and climate change. The panelists are: Jim Angel - IL State Climatologist, Dana Labotka - Isotope Geochemist and Paleoclimatology, and Rob Kanter - Environmental Policy and Environmental Journalism.

Friday, April 22, 11am-3pm, UIUC Main Quad

ECI's Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) is teaming up with the undergraduate ACS Student Chapter to celebrate Earth Day together. We will have a special box for safely disposing batteries, information on the importance of in-home conversation, and demos on water filtration systems. In addition, there are home conservation trivia questions with PRIZES! Bring your family and friends, this event is open to all members of the general public! We look forward to seeing you there!

Saturday, April 23, 12pm-2pm, 165 Noyes Laboratory at UIUC

Join the ACS Student Chapter as we celebrate Earth Day with a Green Chemistry Lecture Luncheon. We will be providing lunch (first come first served) while we discuss topics about the role of sustainable chemistry in agriculture. Representatives from the Illinois EPA and the Department of Crop Sciences will talk. These talks are fairly accessible to those without a chemical background and all are welcome to attend!

Monday, April 25th, 6pm-7:30pm, 263 Noyes Laboratory at UIUC

The UIUC Women Chemists Committee (WCC) will be hosting "World of Colors: The Chemistry of Natural Dyes." In celebration of Earth Day, this hands-on workshop will allow participants to learn about natural dyes. Throughout history, dyes derived from plants and minerals have been used to color textiles. Participants will learn about the history and chemistry of natural dyes and textiles and have the opportunity to do hands on activities using natural dyes to color provided fabrics. Register online by Apr 20. Although these talks are targeted toward an audience with some chemical background, they are fairly accessible. ALL Department of Chemistry graduate students, post-docs, faculty and staff are invited along with any member of the ECI local section and their friends or family members. Ages 10 and up are welcome, however children under 18 must have a guardian present with them during the event.
