A blind student is enrolled in my CP Chemistry Course in September. What lesson plans and modifications have you used that were successful?
The ACS Committee on Chemists with Disabilities has a publication called "Teaching Chemistry to Students with Disabilities" which may be of some help, http://portal.acs.org/portal/acs/corg/content?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=PP_SUPERARTICLE&node_id=344&use_....
Also if you look at the list of members of the committee (start at www.acs.org/committees if the link to the publication didn't work, or you can't get back "out" from there), you will see Cary Supalo. He is a graduate student in chemistry who is blind and his email is listed. He may have some suggestions for you from his own experiences or be able to help point you to some resources. CWD member Jean Delfiner is a retired high school teacher who may also prove very helpful to you.
Please say hello from Marisa Burgener (my maiden name, when I was on staff at ACS) if you contact them!
Regards,
Marisa
Thank you for that link.

Hi, Tina!
I just saw your message.... I'm the current Chair of CWD.... and we do have several blind members (Dr. Dennis Fantin & Cary Supalo) & 1 low vision member (yours truly) so we can definitely give you some suggestions on what will be successful for your incoming student... CWD does indeed have the publication: "Teaching Chemistry to Students with Disabilities" and it is available at no charge from our committee.... with the recent overhaul of the ACS network, the link doesn't appear to be functioning properly to download it directly (I'll have to speak to our techies about that right away)... we can also provide you with free print copies of the book.
If you contact our Staff Liaison, Ms. Paula Christopher, she will send 1 or more copies right out to you.... Paula's email address is P_Christopher@acs.org and her direct phone number is: 1-800-227-5558, ext. 6122
I see that you are located in New Jersey.... I am based at FDA in Philadelphia and if you/your student would like to meet a "blind/low vision" chemist, in person and see/try adaptations first hand, you are both welcome to visit me in my lab. And I'd be happy to email/chat on the phone: Judith.Summers-Gates@fda.hhs.gov Phone: 215-717-3008
CWD has another free publication that might also be of interest to you: "Opportunities in Science: Working Chemists with Disabilities".... it profiles 17 different chemists who have a variety of jobs and a variety of disabilities. The book has been very reassuring to those who are just starting their careers and also to those who acquire a disability mid-career. CWD is celebrating our 30th anniversary this year & our motto is "WE ALL CAN"
Thank you for your help. I've already been in contact with Drs. Supalo anad
Rankin and havae learned a lot. There's still a lot to learn.
