SynMatter Receives $1M SBIR Phase II Award

SynMatter LLC, a minority woman-owned startup located with an Orlando business address, won a $1,000 National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Phase II award to develop a robust, optimized manufacturing process for its superhydrophobic, triggered release anticorrosion Smart Particle.  The funds will also serve to confirm product performance and complete all quality testing to commercialize products. The company projects that inclusion of the Smart Particles into protective coatings could save asset owners millions of dollars by doubling their useful life, reducing maintenance costs up to 50% and in reducing the number of applications to protect surfaces. Dr Xuejun Zhang, Founder and CEO of SynMatter, anticipates the funding will permit the scale up of manufacturing to bring their product to market in the next 12 to 18 months.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida,  Dr. Zhang was awarded a postdoctoral Research Fellowship at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center where she developed a patent pending method for encapsulating organic and inorganic compounds into controlled release microparticles. The company recently added to its ranks Dillon Campbell, a Chemical Engineer and a graduate from the University of Florida, Gainesville. More information on the company can be found at https://synmatter.co.
