Thanks to everyone who joined the ACS Green Chemistry Institute® for the 25th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering (GC&E) Conference the week of June 14! The Conference Co-Chairs, Jillian Goldfarb at Cornell University and Guy Humphrey at Merck, did an amazing job in organizing programming around the theme “Sustainable Production to Advance the Circular Economy”. The success of the conference was due to the hard work of Jillian and Guy, the advisory committee, the symposium organizers, and my wonderful ACS colleagues in the Green Chemistry Institute and the Meetings Department.

Our keynote speakers—Eunice Heath, Dow; Gregg Beckham, National Renewable Energy Laboratory; Frank Gupton, Virginia Commonwealth University; and Amy Prieto, Colorado State University—delivered outstanding presentations focused on their research and the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and respect across the chemistry enterprise.  Once again, we were honored to partner with ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering on the journal’s Lectureship Awards, recognizing the accomplishments of Jun Huang, The University of Sydney; Jeremy Luterbacher, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne; and Meagan Mauter, Stanford University.

On Tuesday, June 15, Michal Freedhoff, Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention, announced the winners of the 2021 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards.  ACS congratulates Professor Srikanth Pilla, Clemson University; XPloSafe, LLC; Merck Research Laboratories; Bristol Myers Squibb; and Colonial Chemicals, Inc. on their award-winning technologies!

Over 1300 attendees from 55 countries registered for the event, with 83% participating during the week. The GC&E Poster Session ran daily, giving poster presenters a chance to discuss their research. Virtual networking opportunities on topics such as inclusive classrooms, open-access publishing, and research to commercialization engaged attendees in discussion throughout the conference.  We greatly appreciate the support of all of our conference sponsors, who help make this conference possible.  We are especially grateful to our gold sponsors, Agilent Technologies, MilliporeSigma, and the ACS GCI Pharmaceutical Roundtable, for their dedication to advancing green and sustainable chemistry and engineering.

On-demand content is available for registrants through August 16, and I encourage you to log in and view the presentations you may have missed during the live conference.  We are optimistic that the 2022 GC&E Conference will be back in person in Reston, Virginia, June 6-8, 2022.  Please consider submitting a symposium proposal when submissions open later this summer.

Stay safe and healthy!
