Students (K through College/Universities) from around the world, during the 24 hours of Earth Day on April 22, 2012, let’s answer the question “What can green chemistry do to help mother Earth become less toxic and more sustainable by utilizing the 12 principles of green chemistry?” Students can utilize the ACS Network, and/or ACS Green Chemistry Institute Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn pages to post one comment every 12 minutes (timeframe based on the 12 GC principles) for 24 hours answering the question. Make a video for “can you tell your neighbor what you think green chemistry is?” and post on YouTube. THANKS for thinking Green!
Based on the first principle, the most important think to do for help the mother Earth become less toxic and more sustainable is Prevent to create materials which can not be recycled, because they go to end on trash.
To achieve a less toxic and more sustainable, we must consider the principle which exhorts us to reduce power consumption, making our homes to be eco-friendly and achieve better management of the energy consumed in these using the efficient energy resource, the sun. OJ
Increasing the energy efficiency and giving a rest to Earth for at least one hour daily will reduce energy consumption and can have dramatic effect.
One of the best ways to help make mother Earth less toxic is to design products that, after they've been used, they can degrade into environmentally safe products. This can be achieved by making a cradle-to-grave life cycle analysis of the product you want to manufacture so that after it accomplishes its function it can become innocuous material that can be safely disposed of, reused or recycled.
Green chemistry can help Mother Earth by performing synthesis where they generate less secondary products that are toxic, biodegradable products that is generated and used catalysts for the reactions are carried in less time so you do not have to use other reagents. AJ
Given the ten principle, we should create products that can be degraded once they have been used. By this way we are helping Mother Earth in reducing the amount of trash and material that go to the environment. JG
Besides reducing the use of toxic materials, we should also think about using renewable feedstocks and raw materials in chemical processes accompanied by reaction conditions that favor ambient temperature and pressure rather than a high energy consumption methodology. This would reduce waste production and minimize hazardous waste in the environment.
It is important to optimize the chemical processes used today with the use of renewable materials, and the employment of energy efficient techniques that reduce the production of toxic waste that harms the environment. Also, we should consider more options in the implementation procedures that can actually be a source of energy, rather than just consuming it.
As applied chemists, always need in our mind that when you create something or give ideas to do, the materials, at point where we are, should be from renewable sources and these in turn in it at future to minimize waste that are harmful to the quality of life of any person and natural resources such as land and water. (Remember principle number seven) OJ
