Summary

Clean Production Action seeks a detail-oriented and experienced researcher and writer. Your role will be to research and analyze information on a diverse set of topics related to improving environmental health through the use of safer chemicals; and prepare written reports, case studies, and summaries. Example research questions include: What are best practices in chemicals management? Which companies use which chemicals in which applications? What are safer alternatives to toxic chemicals? Why do companies invest in green chemistry solutions? Successful candidates will excel in researching and writing on technical topics related to chemicals production, consumption, and management.

Your work will advance the use of safer chemicals through our BizNGO and Chemical Footprint programs. BizNGO and the Chemical Footprint Project are two unique initiatives that define business pathways to safer chemicals in our economy. BizNGO is an established network of leading businesses and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working together to define sustainable chemical management and move the market to safer chemicals. The mission of the Chemical Footprint Project (CFP) is to transform global chemical use by measuring and disclosing data on business progress to safer chemicals.  The Research Associate will be responsible for performing research and writing documents to meet the growing demand for assessments of business practices, identification of safer alternatives, and evaluation and implementation of chemicals policy initiatives.  The researcher will also be responsible for reviewing and analyzing the data received from companies submitting data to the CFP and following up with companies as needed to verify information.

We seek candidates with proven experience in researching and writing in-depth articles, case studies, and fact sheets on corporate sustainability, green chemistry, and public policies. Our preference is for candidates familiar with business sustainability, toxic chemical issues, and efforts to create market demand for safer chemicals in consumer products in order to enhance human health and the environment. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, creative, and excel at working in diverse coalitions.

Qualifications, Salary, & Location

Successful applicants will:

  • Have a master’s degree in science or public policy and two years of professional research and writing experience.
  • Have excellent researching, writing, and editing skills.
  • Have a sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including businesses, investors, and environmental groups. Knowledge of business sustainability is preferred.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be self-starting and entrepreneurial; enjoying the creation and implementation of new and challenging initiatives.

Salary: $50,000 - $55,000. Benefits include 401(k) plan, medical, dental, vacation, and holidays.

Location: CPA office in Somerville, MA.
