This webinar focuses on marine products developed based on principles of green chemistry in order to allow us to enjoy boating and fishing without causing long-term environmental damage. Andries Breedt (Breedt Production Tooling and Design) will present his novel design for a marine fender that is both more functional at absorbing energy and less toxic than conventional marine bumpers, with minimal installation requirements that do not disturb the seabed nor require heavy machinery. In order to demonstrate that his product has a better toxicity profile, Breedt used a fail-fast testing approach recommended by Northwest Green Chemistry (NGC).
Amelia Nestler (Northwest Green Chemistry) will present a status update on NGC’s ongoing Alternative Assessment that looks at alternatives to copper-based antifouling boat paint. Even at low concentrations, copper can negatively impact fish and other marine life. With the support of the Northwest Marine Trade Association, Washington State is phasing out the use of copper in recreational boat paint (Chapter 70.300 RCW). NGC is assessing available alternative technologies for a variety of considerations including inherent human and environmental hazards, performance, cost & availability, comparative exposure, impacts on boatyard permitting, and VOCs.
