The SHARE function doesn't seem to be working. How do I SHARE an update?

I get an error message when I try to SHARE the Update I just posted, something about the content being unavailable or that I'm not logged in (obviously, I am logged in).  Also, the HELP - CONTACT US function doesn't work, which is why I'm starting this discussion instead.  Please advise.

Thank you for contacting us. We will correct the Contact Us link.

We're trying to replicate your problem. Can you help us by letting us know what browser you are using to access the ACS Network? Also, just to be clear, you were trying to share your status update with "share" button with the gold arrow that's the second option on the right sidebar?

Thank you,
Chris

Here's the e-mail I just sent in reply to this message:

Chris,

I'm on a MacPro (dual 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM internal memory) running Mac OS X v10.6.8; my browser is Safarai Version 5.1.10 (6534.59.10).

The error message I get from the SHARE link (displayed below my status post) is as follows:

Your content could not be saved due to an error. You may have been logged out. If this problem persists please contact your system administrator. Click here to refresh this page.

This error is 100% reproducible.  I'm getting a little tired of it.  I don't know anything about a "gold arrow" in the right sidebar.  There is no such thing on my screen.  I'll attach a screen capture to show you what I see.

Also, how do I get to my stuff when I log into the ACS Network?  I spent five minutes just trying to find  my status post from yesterday.  When I click "Updates" under the "My Content" drop down menu, I get everyone else's most recent Updates rather then mine, which are buried somewhere down below.

I would be happy to talk with you about these issues.

Thank you, Alex

Hi Alex,

Based on your screenshot, it appears that you are trying to enter a Status Update. And no, you shouldn't see the red bar. If you ignore it, does it let you enter the data?

We're working through a couple bugs and that red bar is one of them. If you get a chance, please log in with a different browser and or a different computer to see if you see the same thing.  I think it is related to your account as we have found a similar issue for another account (when they use the Search) . It has been hard to reproduce, but we are working with our vendor on this.

To answer your second question, I'm not sure which "My Stuff" you are looking for.  With the upgrade, we changed the link "My Stuff" to "My Links", but there are all sorts of ways to find your content.

Updates - refers to Status Updates

If you are looking for content you generated, You can go to the Your Content, then select a content type such as discussions. On that page, you should be able to click on All Content to see everything you have offered.

Is that what you mean?

Christine

Christine,

I get that red bar in Firefox just the same as in Safari.  This reply is coming from Firefox (just for variety).  I can reply to a discussion despite the red bar.

I still have no idea how to find my own status updates.  When I click on "My Content" and select "Updates" I see everyone's Updates.  If I scroll down far enough, I can find my post.  But, I can't Share it.

Another question, why doesn't my Avatar / Icon show up next to my post?

Alex Madonik

P.S. Is there an official NCW 2013 Discussion?  I didn't receive any message about it.  How do we submit our photos for C&E News this year?

Hello again,

Back in Safari.  When I go to my profile home, then I can select the "Content" tab and I see some stuff that I posted. -- but NOT the Update I posted last week.  What is going on?  How does ANYONE see Updates?  Should I bother with them at all?  If I want to Share some pictures, what is the best modality for posting them?

Alex Madonik

P.S.  I can see that Update if I select the "Activity" tab.  My NCW Update now displays my Profile photo, because I uploaded it AGAIN as an Avatar.  Why isn't my photo my default Avatar?  When did this change happen?

Alex,

Thanks for all the information. This is all very very good information for us.

Users should be able to see Status updates (or updates)  in the Activity Stream. We'll be publishing more information about these streams, but they are the way to monitor what is going on in the Network.

You have to definitely set up your photo as an avatar. If you do not, you are assigned a random system avatar. So the photo is not automatically converted to an avatar, especially since you are allowed to upload multiple photos but only display one avatar.

And believe it or not, this is great news about the red bar. I will file a case with our vendor as I think your account is showing a similar behavior to another account. Its very strange behavior that we haven't been able to figure out.

Christine

Alex, here is probably the easiest way to find your own Status updates.

Please verify that you cannot share them. And if you get an error, please send me the date and time so we can look in the logs.

Thanks,

Christine

Yes, that's how I was able to find my Update NCW 2013.

It's 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 29th in California (11 PM in Washington, DC or 3 AM UTC on October 30th) and I just tried to share the NCW 2013 Update with Bryan Balazs.  Same old red bar error message when I click on Share in the dialog box after selecting Bryan to share with.  By the way, why does this dialog show me dozens of people I've never heard of, when I'm not ALLOWED to share with anyone who's not one of my contacts?  It would be SO much more helpful if it only showed my contacts.

I still don't understand why Updates are not Content.  Apparently, Discussions are Activity, too, but they also count as Content.

You are right about it is a bit confusing.

Status updates aren't considered content by the system. I think it has to deal with the fact that they are temporary and aren't really archived.  They are like a notice.

Anything you do, post content, like, etc, is considered Activity.

As for the contacts coming up, I'll look into that and provide that feedback to our vendor.

THANKS again for all the feedback.

Christine

Alex,

We put in a fix in place last week. Please check and see if you can now share content. Thanks!

Seems to work now -- the Share button and other functions now appear in a box on the right-hand side of the screen next to my Activity window, and I got a message saying sharing was successful.  This action is now at the top of my Activity list.

Good work!  -Alex
