Position Description
Texas Tech University seeks an Assistant Vice President to direct the Department of Environmental Health & Safety and administer the university’s environmental health and safety programs.

Essential Functions
The objective of this position is to develop, implement, administer and monitor all environmental health and safety programs for the university. Programs are expected to be in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local statutes, regulations and ordinances and to establish institutionally approved prudent practices, procedures and standards.

Specific examples of the position’s scope of work include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop a high-impact and metric-based laboratory safety program and ensure that it is communicated, followed, and enforced. Participate in national activities that promote such programs.

Preferred Qualifications
• Terminal (MA, MS or MPH, PhD or equivalent) degree in an Environmental Health & Safety discipline or a science or engineering discipline.
• Five (5) years of experience with responsibility for working closely with management and oversight of laboratory safety programs, hazardous materials disposal, chemical hygiene, biosafety, radiation safety, occupational health & safety, environmental protection, or other environmental health & safety activities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and perform operational functions required for compliance with all applicable federal and state statutes and regulations, ordinances and control functions for environmental health and safety at a research university
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with staff in the development of new programs consistent with the needs of the institution, including education, record keeping, public relations, and related functions.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, in addition to advisory boards, committees, and other policy formulating or recommending groups; evidence of positive performance with regard to responses to inquiries from these agencies.
• Possession of one or more of the following professional certifications:
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) – American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) – Board of Certified Safety Professionals
- Certified Health Physicist (CHP) – American Board of Health Physics
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) – Institute of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers
• Working knowledge and application of computer-based management systems with applications to EH&S related functions such as record keeping, inventory tracking, budget control, etc.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license.

There is a postdoctoral opening in my lab, which will involve functionalizing and characterizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs).  Functionalizations will include attaching groups to SWCNTs covalently and by complexation.  The characterization includes those techniques typically used in organic chemistry (such as NMR, IR, UV, etc) and others (such as Raman, TEM, etc.).

The position is currently available, so I will be more interested in potential candidates who are located in the US.

Research Associate-Advanced: Oligonucleotide Synthesis Chemist

Biotechnology Laboratories (10-12 months) Santa Clara, CA

Job Description:

In this role you will be responsible for the synthesis, isolation, purification, and analysis of synthetic oligonucleotides.

Key responsibilities will include the preparation and purification of synthetic RNA and chemically modified synthetic RNA using automated solid-phase synthesis techniques. You will be pushing RNA synthesis state of the art using proprietary TC-RNA chemistry, and will be responsible for ordering, maintaining, and monitoring an inventory of chemical reagents, as well as maintenance and monitoring of the hardware components used for the synthesis, purification and analysis of the RNA products.  You will be expected to help develop and optimize synthetic protocols and purification protocols, and be able to organize the data generated into clear and easy to read reports.

Job Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or MS/MA or PhD in Chemistry or Biochemistry, or equivalent.
  • Research experience in support of synthetic organic chemistry research or development projects.
  • 2+ years’ experience in solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis, using and trouble-shooting automated solid-phase synthesizers and optimizing synthetic protocols and reaction schemas.
  • 2+ years’ experience in the evaluation, analysis, characterization, purification, and optimization of purification protocols of oligonucleotides (RNA and DNA) via HPLC. Hands-on experience manipulating and synthesizing RNA in an R&D environment and practiced in anhydrous and RNAse-free lab techniques.
  • Practiced in the development and bottling of buffers and reagents, as well as the management of laboratory chemicals and raw materials inventories.
  • Ability to work independently and to execute and troubleshoot new methods.
  • Must be able to think on their feet and “outside the box” to solve the problem.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of affinity chromatography techniques.
  • Experience with NMR and Mass Spectrometry.
  • Excellent time management, record keeping, teamwork and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy including proficiency with Word and Excel.
