The American Chemical Society is the largest organization in the world devoted to a single discipline with over 150,000 members world-wide. The Nashville Section is one of 189 local sections nation-wide. We serve member chemists and chemical engineers in middle Tennessee and south central Kentucky. There are six other sections that serve Tennessee.
On March 2nd , 6pm in the MTSU Science Building, room 1003 join us for the MTSU National Women's History Month 2022 Lecture - Nationally known forensic chemist Kelly Elkins, a founding editor of the Journal of Forensic Science Education, will speak on diversity and forensic science. She will present strategies and approaches for creating an inclusive classroom using the American Chemical Society’s DEIR core values. DEIR demonstrates the society’s commitment to cultivating and promoting a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and respectful community of chemistry professionals.

Thursday, March 3, 6pm MTSU Science Building, Room 1003: Nationally known forensic chemist Kelly Elkins will speak about using modern techniques to analyze DNA extracted from historic bone and teeth. The results of next generation sequencing demonstrate the potential not only to obtain short tandem repeat (STR) profiles from historic bone and teeth, but also to retrieve phenotypic and biogeographical ancestry information and augment the bioarcheological analysis. Three Steps to Claiming Your Voice: A Framework for Empowerment The real power of the women who fought for the right to vote was that they would not be silenced. Yet for all the ways higher education seeks to foster diverse voices, it remains a space where women’s authority is regularly challenged and their voices interrupted, ignored, or silenced. In this hands-on, 90-minute workshop geared toward faculty and graduate students, participants will explore aspects of their professional lives when they feel silenced, learn about the costs of not speaking up, and identify concrete strategies for more confidently advocating for themselves.
