Celebrate National Chemistry Week!

National Chemistry Week begins soon, and we’ll ring in the festivities with a live webcast from ACS. This year is the International Year of the Periodic Table, so the webcast will celebrate 78.8% of the elements on the table with a presentation all about interesting metals and their surprising applications. There’s no better way to get ready for Halloween than by thinking about heavy metals!

Before the webcast, everyone will receive copies of the poems that were submitted for the ACS Illustrated Poem Contest – there’s still time to submit your poem before the October 21 deadline (more info below). Everyone is invited to take the poems home to read, then vote for the best poem in each age category (again, see below) – the winner of the national contest will win a cash prize and eternal fame!

Plus, we’ll be giving out some fabulous door prizes before the webcast! Pizza will be served – of course, everyone is welcome to attend the talk even if they must miss dinner.

The ACS Illustrated Poem Contest

The Illustrated Poem Contest is a great way for your students to show off their creative side as they learn about the chemistry of metals! There are several age categories:

 K – 2nd grade

 3rd – 5th grade

 6th – 8th grade

 9th – 12th grade

Only one submission per student, please. Rules for the allowed types and length of the poems, and the illustrations that accompany them, are found at the website: https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/outreach/ncw/plan-an-event/illustra ted-poemcontest.htm...

All poems should be submitted no later than 12:00 noon on Monday, October 21. The poems will be distributed to ACS members who come to the monthly meeting on October 22 (and they’ll also be emailed to members who can’t attend). You’ll have about a week to vote for a winner.

An entry form (found at the website above) should accompany each poem. Poems can be submitted via email at wdoria@rockford.edu or via regular mail at
