Chemistry Student, Mohammed Salah Mohammed of Sudan, Released from Prison

Posted on behalf of Scholars at Risk (SAR)

SAR welcomes the news that student leader Mohammed Salah Mohammed of Sudan was released from prison on August 10, 2012.

Scholars at Risk is an international network of over 300 universities and colleges in 34 countries dedicated to promoting academic freedom and defending the human rights of scholars worldwide.

Scholars at Risk was among the human rights groups advocating for Mohammed Salah Mohammed, a twenty-three-year old chemistry student in his final year at the faculty of science at the University of Khartoum, Sudan. SAR received reports that Mohammed Salah Mohammed was arrested on June 24, 2012 by the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) while having dinner with fellow students. He is the Spokesperson of the Sudanese Student Democratic Front and the president of the Nubian’s regional student association, which advocates the needs of the Nubian minority at the university. He was arrested in the week following non-violent student protests in which he took part. On July 31, 2012, SAR issued a call for action on behalf of Mohammed Salah Mohammed, urging the appropriate authorities to examine the circumstances of Mohammed Salah Mohammed’s detention and to intervene to ensure his well-being, including ensuring immediate and regular access to legal counsel of his choosing, to family and to medical treatment. He was released from prison on August 10, 2012. SAR welcomes this news and will continue to monitor his situation in the months to come.

Many thanks to all who sent letters of appeal on behalf of this and other scholars. For information on SAR’s advocacy work, please visit: http://scholarsatrisk.nyu.edu/Education-Advocacy/Alerts-Scholars-in-Prison.php. For more information on Scholars at Risk, please visit: www.scholarsatrisk.org.
