The American Chemical Society recently instituted a Youth Protection Policy in order to provide a safe environment for youth who participate in ACS hosted events. A key component of this policy is a requirement for background checks for volunteers at ACS hosted events (i.e. Chemistry at the Mall).
The ACS has tried to make this process convenient by paying the fees for the background checks and partnering with Sterling Volunteers to streamline the process. The most likely inconveniences for you are about 5- 20 minutes of your time and the requirement to keep track of another password.

Please do this two weeks before Chemistry at the Mall (which happens Saturday, Oct. 26th). The background check is supposed to take about 3 days but may take longer.
You will need your social security number, your address, an email, a new password and the addresses of places you have lived in the last 7 years.
The process is advertised to take about 5 minutes. It took me about 11 minutes and 42 seconds this morning because I took notes and read the disclosure about the Fair Credit Reporting Act. I also have not moved in 12 years. I did not read the Privacy Policy or Terms of Use but agreed to it anyways. Hopefully I won't regret that decision. 🙄
