Vote on the Update to Western Michigan Local Section Bylaws

Vote on the Update to Western Michigan Local Section Bylaws

The Western Michigan Local Section (WMLS) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is currently undertaking an update of its Section Bylaws. The last revision of these Bylaws was completed in 2012. Since then, there have been significant changes both to the ACS Governing Documents and to the operational practices of the WMLS. This update is intended to ensure that the Section Bylaws are in full compliance with the latest ACS Governing Documents, while also making additional revisions that better reflect the current operation of the section.

Key Proposed Changes

  • Term Lengths for Treasurer and Secretary:
  • The proposed changes include extending the terms for both the Treasurer and Secretary from one year to two years. This adjustment is intended to provide greater continuity and stability within these important roles.
  • Transition Support from Past Officers:
  • Following the conclusion of their terms, the Past-Treasurer and Past-Secretary will continue to serve on the Section’s Executive Committee for one additional year. This measure is designed to facilitate an orderly and effective transfer of responsibilities to the incoming Treasurer and Secretary.
  • Clarification of Roles and Duties:
  • The updated Bylaws will include more detailed descriptions of the duties for officers, Board members, and several Committee Chairs. This additional documentation aims to provide interested members with a clearer understanding of the expectations and requirements associated with these positions.

Both the current Section Bylaws and the draft of the proposed Bylaws are attached below for your review.
