On Friday, November 7, Ad Astra Books & Coffee buzzed with energy as the Wichita Local Section of the American Chemical Society hosted a lively and well-attended Science Café in the heart of Salina. The cozy venue was filled with curious minds—students, educators, coffee aficionados, and lifelong learners—all drawn by the promise of good conversation and great coffee.

The evening’s highlight was a captivating talk by Samuel Finch, Operations Manager at Blacksmith Coffee Roastery, titled “From Bush to Barista: the Chemistry of Coffee Growing and Roasting.” Finch guided the audience through the molecular magic behind their morning brew, unpacking the science of flavor development, roasting reactions, and the delicate balance of chemistry that transforms a humble bean into a beloved beverage.

With no registration required and a welcoming atmosphere, the event attracted a diverse crowd eager to learn and connect. Laughter, thoughtful questions, and the aroma of fresh coffee filled the air, making it clear that science and community are a perfect blend.

The Wichita ACS Section extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who joined us—and to Ad Astra Books & Coffee for providing the perfect setting. Stay tuned for future Science Cafés and more opportunities to explore the wonders of chemistry in everyday life!
