The Wichita Local Section of the American Chemical Society includes approximately the western three-fourths of the state of Kansas. We hosted the 2010 Midwest Regional Meeting.
On Friday, November 7, Ad Astra Books & Coffee buzzed with energy as the Wichita Local Section of the American Chemical Society hosted a lively and well-attended Science Café in the heart of Salina. The cozy venue was filled with curious minds—students, educators, coffee aficionados, and lifelong learners—all drawn by the promise of good conversation and great coffee. The evening’s highlight was a captivating talk by Samuel Finch, Operations Manager at Blacksmith Coffee Roastery, titled “From Bush to Barista: the Chemistry of Coffee Growing and Roasting.” Finch guided the audience through the molecular magic behind their morning brew, unpacking the science of flavor development, roasting reactions, and the delicate balance of chemistry that transforms a humble bean into a beloved beverage. With no registration required and a welcoming atmosphere, the event attracted a diverse crowd eager to learn and connect. Laughter, thoughtful questions, and the aroma of fresh coffee filled the air, making it clear that science and community are a perfect blend. The celebration kicks off with a complimentary dinner at 5:00 PM in the cozy Weidenbach Room, catered by Hog Wild. This past weekend, members of the Wichita local section came together for a delightful outing at Rolling Hills Zoo in Salina. With sunny skies and mild temperatures, it was the perfect setting for reconnecting with colleagues, sharing good food, and enjoying the company of family and friends. A strong turnout made the event feel vibrant and welcoming. Attendees explored the zoo’s impressive exhibits—including exotic wildlife and immersive habitats—while kids and adults alike found plenty to marvel at. From majestic big cats to playful primates, the zoo offered something for everyone. Beyond the attractions, the gathering was a chance to strengthen community ties. Laughter, conversation, and shared meals created a relaxed and joyful atmosphere that reminded us of the value of connection—both professional and personal. On January 25, 2025, a crisp early afternoon in Salina, Kansas, the Wichita Local Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) gathered for a memorable and productive meeting at the beloved local restaurant, Martinelli's. The vibrant atmosphere of the Italian eatery provided the perfect backdrop for an event brimming with fruitful discussions, camaraderie, and delightful cuisine. Many ACS members attended, filling the room with enthusiastic conversations and innovative ideas. The meeting featured discussions on the current happenings in the section and quickly turned to the initial planning for the ACS Midwest Regional Meeting (MWRM) 2029. The productive dialogue underscored the group's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and fostering a supportive professional community. The business portion of the meeting was intermingled with wonderful food, laughter, and discussions about the happenings in each other’s lives. The shared dining experience allowed members to connect on a more personal level, further strengthening the bonds within the ACS community. The laughter and animated chatter that filled the room were testaments to the event's success.
