Why didn't zinc react with hydrochloride acid like planned?

Question asked by luciano castellano on Jan 30, 2019

Today in my chemistry class we were doing an experiment that required us to get hydrogen gas from the reaction of zinc and hydrochloride. we used a hydrogen generator which allowed us to get the hydrogen gas. The zinc however failed to react with the hydrochloride acid like it should have. There was little hydrogen gas collected and the reaction was minimal and extreme slow. How is this so? we went to using magnesium to get the hydrogen gas but the zinc had failed to produce the gas we were expecting. Anyone know why?
