Under-represented minorities account for 34% of those aged 18-24 in the United States, so a robust science labor force will need effective ways to reach these young people. A new book edited by Mary K. Boyd and Jodi L. Wesemann provides examples of high-quality programs that seek to foster interest in science by involving undergraduate students in research. The book focuses on programs at those institutions that are often not considered in national-level research discussions: community colleges, minority-serving and comprehensive institutions, and those that are predominantly undergraduate institutions.
