C&EN Comment by Martin Abraham, CEI

A Comment column in C&EN by Martin Abraham (CEI Chair) just appeared at http://pubs.acs.org/isubscribe/journals/cen/89/i08/html/8908acscomment.html on the topic of Sustainability:Getting Involved.  Any thoughts?

In the California Section, we are doing three things related to this issue:  1) we've formed a "sustainability" committee to identify and coordinate mechanisms for public outreach, 2) we've connected to the University of California, Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC),  whose mission is to advance "green chemistry through research, teaching and engagement" and the BCGC Director will be the speaker for our March section meeting, and 3) we have an ongoing involvement in the annual Earth Day events.   While not specific to the education emphasis noted in the C&EN comment, the California Section is definitely taking steps to broaden our public outreach for sustainability issues.  All of our section meetings thus far this year have been tied to the IYC 2011 theme  of "Environment", with talks in January on CA water issues and in February on electric cars (and the March meeting as noted above).
