Forensics and organic chem labs

Has anyone used forensic chemistry in an organic chemistry setting?   These students tend to have the least real life applications in their courses and it is very dry stuff.  Forensics could really make it interesting.  Most of what I have seen is aimed at nonscience or analytical chemistry.  If you have some ideas or even better actual labs you use I would loe tohear about them.

Re: Forensics and organic chem labs

I found this on a forum: http://www.chemicalforums.com/index.php?topic=40224.0

They made luminol in their organic chem lab. I think it would be interesting to make the synthesis then use some animal blood (easy to find at a buthcer shop) to show how it works.

Luminol exhibits chemiluminescence and is used to detect blood stains. It glows blue so I think it would make a nice and interesting lab.
